Beaver Island is the largest island in Lake Michigan and part of the Beaver Island archipelago. Once home to a unique American monarchy, the island is now a popular tourist and vacation destination.
Beaver Island lies approximately 32 miles (51 km) from the city of Charlevoix on the mainland, and can only be reached by air or boat. The island has two airports, one public and one private.
Beaver is thirteen miles (21 km) long, three to six miles (10 km) wide, and forms part of Charlevoix County, Michigan. It is mostly flat and sandy, with large forested tracts. The more densely settled portion, comprising only 6 percent of Beaver's total land area, lies within St. James Township on the northern end. St. James Township also includes , Garden Island, High Island, Hog Island, and several smaller islands in Lake Michigan, all uninhabited on a permanent basis. Peaine Township, taking up the remaining 94 percent of the island, contains sizable parcels of state-owned land and is mostly undeveloped.
Our cabin resides in the St. James Township, and although it is conveniently located and within walking/biking distance to the downtown village, it is recommended that you either bring your vehicle or rent one. If you want to bring your vehicle it is a good idea to contact the Beaver Island Boat Company as soon as your plans are firm to secure a reservation on the ferry. If you want to rent a vehicle please see the Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce website for a listing of available transporation and rental car options.
